 公司历史

BB&T'sbeginningsdatebackto1872,whenAlpheusBranchandJeffersonHadleyfoundedthe"BranchandHadley"merchantbankintheirsmallhometownofWilson,NorthCarolina.Aftermanytransactions,mostlywithlocalfarmers,BranchboughtoutHadley'ssharesin1887andrenamedthecompanyto"BranchandCompany,Bankers".Twoyearslater,Branch,hisfatherfather-in-lawGen.JoshuaBarnes,Hadley,andthreeothermen,securedacharterfromtheNorthCarolinaGeneralAssemblytooperatethe"WilsonBankingandTrustCompany".Afternumerousadditionalnamechanges,thecompanyfinallysettledonthename"BranchBankingandCompany".Branchremainedanactivememberinthecompanyuntilhisdeathin1893.

In1900,allofBranch'sbankingcompaniesconsolidatedasBranchBankingandCompany,allowingtheinstitutiontoexpanditsservices.In1902asavingsdepartmentwascreatedandin1907atrustdepartmentwasauthorized;thismadeBranch'scompanythefirstinthestatetoengageintrustactivities.Thebankmadeitsfinalnamechangein1913to"BranchBankingandTrust",orBB&T,toreflectitsnewactivities.

BB&TsoldLibertyBondsduringWorldWarIandgrewtohavemorethan$4millioninassetsby1923.Aninsurancedivisionwasaddedin1922,followedbyamortgagedivisionin1923.Asbanksacrossthenationfailedasaresultofthe1929StockMarketCrash,BB&Tsurvived;itwastheonlyonetodosointhetownofWilson.

WorldWarIIrevivedBB&TandbroughtprosperitytotheAmericaneconomy.BB&T'sprosperitycontinuedintothe1960s,asmergersandacquisitionsgrewtocompanyto$343millioninassetswithnewbranchesin35cities.By1994,BB&ThadbecomeNorthCarolina'slargestbankwith$10.5billioninassetsand263officesin138citiesintheCarolinas.

In1995,BB&TandSouthernNationalBankcompleteda"mergerofequals",givingthenewBB&T437branchesin220citiesintheCarolinasandVirginia.Thebankcontinuedtoexpandnationwidethroughthe1990s,purchasingFidelityFederalBankshares,FirstFinancialofPetersburg,MarylandFederalBancorpandFranklinBancorporationintheVirginia/Marylandarea.In1999,BB&TacquiredMainStreetFinancialCorp.ofMartinsville,andMason-DixonBancsharesofWestminster,andfurtherexpanedintoGeorgiaandWestVirginiaafterpurchasingFirstLibertyofMaconandMatewanBancshares.

From2000to2005,BB&Tacquirednumeroussmallerbanks,expandingintoTennessee,Kentucky,andevenFlorida.AsofDec.31,2005,BB&TCorporationhas$109.2billioninassets;operatesmorethan1,400bankingofficesin11statesandtheDistrictofColumbia;andhasmorethan28,000employees.

Inearly2007BB&TacquiredCoastalFederalBankwhichisprimarilylocatedinMyrtleBeach,SouthCarolina.IthasbeenoneoftheCarolina'sfastestgrowingbanks.
